POWDER SPRINGS, GA – The track and field teams competed this past Wednesday and Thursday in the Region 3-AAAAAAA Track and Field Meet. For the first time in school history, the boys emerged as the top team! This ended Marietta’s streak of 9 straight Region Championships. The boys were led in the field events by Chris Williams who took 3rd in the long jump (20-10.00), Darrell Abram who took 1st in the Shot put (48-05.50) and 4th in the Discus (125-10), Logan Tillery who took 1st in the Pole vault and TJ Polk who took 2nd in the Pole Vault. The 4×100 team of Garrett Shedrick, Xavier Collins, Sterling Cathey and Jordan McClesky finished 1st in a time of 41.83 edging out host McEachern by 0.36 seconds (42.19). In the 1600, the Hawks picked up 12 points from Udochi Okoro who finished 2nd in a NEW SCHOOL RECORD of 4:26.29. Cameron Bensley finished 5th in a PR of 4:32.12. In the 400, Garret Shedrick (47.69) and Jordan McClesky (49.92) swept the top 2 spots earning 18 points for the team. With no one in the finals for the 100m dash, the Hawks would have to wait until the 110 hurdles for the chance to keep pace with Marietta. In the 110 hurdles, Ari McHenry (14.99) finished 4th and Chris Williams (15.58) finished 6th. With both Hillgrove athletes qualifying for finals and only one Marietta athlete qualifying for finals in the 800, the Hawks looked to close the gap in the team standing in this event. Montgomery Tavares (1:57.81) and Isaiah Gregory (1:59.11) finished 2nd and 5th to earn 12 big points bringing the Hawks in to a tie for first place with Marietta. The 200m dash is where the Hawks began to distance themselves from Region powerhouse Marietta. Garrett Shedrick (21.41) and Sterling Cathey (22.62) finished 1st and 2nd to help the Hawks take a 16 point lead over the Blue Devils. The 300 hurdles also proved to be a big event as the duo of Chris Williams (39.36) and Austin Hogan (39.65) finished 3rd and 4th to edge out Marietta’s hurdlers who finished 5th and 7th. Heading in to the 3200m run, the Hawks had a 21 point lead, however Marietta entered the 3200 with the top 2 seeds, which is also where they finished. They were followed by Cameron Bensley who finished 3rd overall in a NEW SCHOOL RECORD of 9:38.40 and Chase Korzenok (10:06.51) who finished in 4th place. Heading in to the final event of the evening, the Hawks held a 14 point lead over the Blue Devils. The 4×400 team of Garrett Shedrick, Jordan McClesky, Devan Williams and Montgomery Tavares solidified the team title by winning the 4×400 in a NEW SCHOOL RECORD time of 3:17.25 over North Paulding (3:17.78) which currently ranks them 4th in the State.
The top 4 finishers in each event will qualify for the Sectional Meet which will be held on April 29th at McEachern High School. Come out and cheer on the Hawks as they attempt to qualify athletes for the GHSA State Meet to be held at Berry College May 11-13!
